Effects of Divorce or Separation on Children

The guide provides an age by age description about how children deal with divorce and separation that could be useful in helping your children through the process.
The Help Guide article “Children and Divorce: Helping Kids Cope with Separation and Divorce” by Gina Kemp, M.A., Melinda Smith, M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D also has some good advice on how to talk with your children.
The report by The University of Missouri, “Helping Children Understand Divorce” is designed to help understand the thoughts and feelings that children may have when their parents decide to divorce and provides some tips for talking with children about divorce.

Custody Junction offers divorce related online tools to help people before, during and after divorce.
Talking Parents is free co-parenting communication tool that helps co-parents communicate and avoid disputes by maintaining an unalterable record of all conversations, important dates, and shared files.

The U.S. Department Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families Child Welfare Information Gateway promotes the safety, permanency, and well-being of children, youth, and families by connecting child welfare, adoption, and related professionals as well as the public to information, resources, and tools covering topics on child welfare, child abuse and neglect, out-of-home care, adoption, and more.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Child Support Enforcement offers a Question and Answer publication about Child Support.
Support Groups and Services
The Cooperative Parenting Institute is dedicated to providing unique services to families experiencing divorce and separation. Services include psychotherapy, divorce coaching, family mediation, co-parenting, reunification therapy and parenting coordination.
The Children Of Divorced Parents Support Group is a community for the children of divorce (both for adult children who have lived through a divorce as well as parents and co-parents concerned about the effects of divorce on their children). It is an opportunity to share your story and get advice in an online support group with others going through similar challenges.
